Common Base Design Mistakes

Corner Built Base :

This is the most common mistake and the worst idea that you have ever seen in clash of clans!
The enemy can use the dark green patches right next to the walls to drop troops upon this base, shortening time to travel to walls and thus less defensive damage to his attacking troops.

Layering your walls :

Many newbies think that If you have more layers of walls, your village will be more difficult to be destroyed, all enemies' troops will need to break all those wall to attack your town.
Although it's not bad, but it can only against barbarians, archers and other single-target troops. The enemy can use other troops to destroy layers with splash damage, air troops, or hog riders to destroy your wall layers easily.

Surrounding your land with walls :

A common mistake which we can see everyday in clash of clans. Many people build a big square wall then stuff all their buildings & defenses into it! Attackers can break those wall easily with even just one wall breaker, once in it is a simple matter to destroy everything, insuring 100% destruction. And if you are not careful, you will omit some space, which can allow the enemies to spawn their troops inside the large spaces you are creating.

The Big One

 Rushed Town Hall :

Cost to raid- the higher your town hall is, the more gold you have to spend every time you want to raid somebody or every time you have to hit the "next" button if you don't like the random base that is given to you to raid. For a rusher who has Level 10 town hall and is trying to get a ton of resources will have a negative gold profit simply because every time a town hall 10 player hits next they lose 1k gold. Press next 100 times and that's 100k gold lost and you haven't even raided somebody yet. Then you get so mad you trained troops for nothing because you spent too much trying to find the perfect noob to raid that you run out of gold. And then your friend will call you a blithering idiot because you didn't keep an eye on your own personal money.

Loot Multiplier- The higher your Town Hall is, every time you find somebody to raid, if their town hall is lower than yours then the maximum resources you can get from raiding him/her is SEVERELY CUT. Bases that have rushed their town hall to find out raiding people who still have town hall level 4-5 have FILLED ELIXIR COLLECTORS AND GOLD MINES!, but... because the town hall is rushed to 10 they can only get like 50% of what he could really steal if his town hall level was the same as the person he is raiding. Because of that the rushed town hall ended up having to steal loot from higher players, which means gaining trophies, but since the rushed town hall is going after resources from higher level players, those guys have their resources protected, meaning the town hall rusher would have to spend more money on an army that will destroy the opponents base for resources, and because of the high army cost his total calculated profit comes out to be almost ZERO for both gold and elixir!

Every time you get raided, since you have built less stuff and you haven't upgraded almost anything since you are "saving resources", people can easily beat you up and get three stars out of you, and guess what? They take resources from you as well. Why have you lost a ton of resources? Because you had so much that they could steal from you and because they hit you and got three stars, your whole base is destroyed and you lose a ton of resources.

You Forget Important Stuff: rushers like to "save resources". They often forget to upgrade really important stuff, such as their own defenses. Since rushers are always going after resources, they don't care about trophies, which is fine. It's the fact that they are rushing their town hall so much, the rushers put their town hall on the inside of their wall while going after more resources. If you are gonna farm at least put your town hall on the outside that way you don't look like a super dumb. A rusher with a town hall on the inside will look super weak, because majority of rushers forget to upgrade their walls, but a rusher with the town hall on the outside, will be thought of as, "Oh, he's just another one of those farmers, so easy trophies for me, since all I have to do is hit the town hall. I've hit a rusher like that before thinking it was just another regular farmer because, most players that are farmers put their town halls on the outside of their walls and purposely leave it vulnerable.

Offensive Handicap :

When you're attacking another base, the amount of loot you get is affected by the level of your TH as it pertains to theirs. I am aware that rushing your Town Hall does not have anything to do with the level of your troops and subsequently your ability to win attacks against other bases...but...

  1. Most people do not max their troops and skimp on defenses. A rushed TH likely corresponds to lower level troops
  2. Though you're matched to bases according to trophies, not relative TH level, the lower TH level you have while still being able to compete, the more loot you'll get overall.
Rushing your base (in conjunction with not upgrading your troops) means you're looking at getting less loot per attack, which means eventually catching up is going to take longer and longer as upgrading costs rise and the loot you receive is handicapped.

Defensive Penalty :

Attacking bases with higher level town halls is really advantageous. If you're a TH7 and see a TH9 while searching for a base to attack, you'll be able to steal 50% more gold, elixir and dark elixir. If that base is rushed and you can take it out, why wouldn't you?
But what if you're the TH9 on defense, not the TH7 on the attack? This means others can take more of your loot. This is the most important reason not to rush: your base might look very juicy to those who leveled up at the right time and the loot they'll be able to get will be stellar.

Here we have a town hall 10 rushed base.
3 Level 3 air defenses & 1 level 4, 7 & 8 level archer towers, level 1 Teslas, mostly level 5 walls????

Forgetting About Your Walls:

Walls may seem super daunting and annoying to upgrade when there are so many new shiny defenses you could upgrade instead. WRONG. Upgrade your walls while it seems slightly daunting because if you try to upgrade once you have a th9 or th10, it will be excruciating. It is time consuming and incredibly annoying, but good walls separate good players from great players.

Don’t Rush Trophies:

Yes, it will look way cooler to have a purple badge. No, you should not work hard for trophies, unless you will be gem'ing. Stay in gold for a while and upgrade your base. Mentally set aside a few months before you decide to push for cups. The higher cup count you go, the more likely your resources are going to be stolen. No point in farming for an upgrade if people just keep taking it from you. Farm a lot and often and stay at a low cup range, so you can keep that hard earned gold!

Don't Copy The Top Players Base:

Yes, their base is working well for them. No, it will not work for you. Their base works well for a few reasons. 1. They have max defenses and 2. They have friends that will attack them to give them a cheap or free shield. It is extremely unlikely that you will win on defense with a base made for higher defense levels and town hall levels. Make your own base. Try something and tweak it if it doesn’t work. The best defense is one that no one has seen before, something that will not be easy to attack because they have attacked it a million times. Do something new and you just might be surprised.
